A hands-on, experiential sandtray therapy training!

This training introduces clinicians to matrescence as a framework for understanding and supporting the multifaceted experience of becoming a mother. Integrating matrescence-informed care with sand tray therapy, participants will explore how symbolic and nonverbal expression can make visible the internal experiences of motherhood that may exist beyond words. Through foundational concepts, clinical applications, and experiential exploration, participants will consider how sand tray can support mothers in navigating identity shifts, grief, ambivalence, and growth throughout this transition. Clinicians will leave with practical approaches for incorporating sand tray into their work with mothers, honoring motherhood as an ongoing process of becoming that deserves curiosity, compassion, and space for exploration.

*Training is appropriate for mental health graduate students and licensed mental health therapists.

*No prior sandtray therapy training or experience needed.

Learning Objectives

  • Define matrescence as a developmental transition and identify at least three domains of change that may occur during the transition into motherhood, including identity, relationships, and emotional well-being.

  • Identify at least three potential clinical applications of sand tray therapy for exploring the internal experiences of matrescence, including maternal identity, grief, ambivalence, and transformation.

  • Describe how symbolic and nonverbal expression through sand tray may support mothers in exploring and communicating experiences that are difficult to articulate verbally.

  • Apply matrescence-informed clinical prompts and sand tray interventions to facilitate exploration of the maternal self, including the relationship between a mother's former identity, current experience, and emerging sense of self.

  • Integrate a matrescence-informed perspective into clinical practice by identifying strategies to support maternal autonomy, hold the complexity of conflicting emotions, and honor the ongoing process of becoming a mother.
