This training examines how well-intentioned spiritual responses can unintentionally harm individuals grieving pregnancy, infant, or child loss. Participants will explore the intersection of faith, grief, and trauma, including the concept of spiritual bypass and its impact on bereaved

parents. The course emphasizes compassionate, client-centered alternatives that prioritize presence, validation, and emotional safety over explanation or meaning-making. Clinicians will leave with practical tools to support grief in ways that honor both spiritual diversity and profound

loss.

This training is ideal for mental health professionals and student interns seeking to build confidence in supporting bereaved parents.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify and classify at least five common spiritually framed responses that can unintentionally minimize or invalidate trauma and/or grief following miscarriage, stillbirth, infant loss, or child loss

  • Explain at least three core neurobiological mechanisms involved in religious trauma (e.g., amygdala activation, autonomic nervous system dysregulation, memory consolidation disruptions)

  • Analyze how spiritual bypassing, premature meaning-making pressure, and minimizing religious language affect bereaved parents’ emotional regulation, attachment security, and mental health from a neurobiological perspective, including how such responses may activate threat responses (e.g., amygdala hyperactivation), reinforce autonomic nervous system dysregulation, and disrupt integration of traumatic grief, as demonstrated through case analysis and structured discussion.

  • Demonstrate and apply trauma-informed, grief-responsive communication strategies that validate loss, honor the grieving process, and support clients without imposing values or belief systems.
